Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Arabic Translation Section, Languages Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva.

 

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties:

? Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency.

? Revises translations dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations.

? Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.

? Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminology materials and related reference tools.

? Counsels and assists translators and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.

? Participates in the setting of terminology standards.

? Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical. Ability to use all sources of references, consultation and information relevant to text at hand. Ability to work under pressure and maintain adequate speed and volume of output. Ability to show a high level of versatility, judgement and discretion. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery in translation or related area; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Education

A first-level university degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status. Must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Translators.

 

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of translation experience in a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical), with a recognised specialisation in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is required.

 

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in Arabic, which must be the candidate’s main language, is required. Knowledge of English and a third United Nations official language (Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is also required.

 

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
